National Article about Grace Rancho

From GraceConnect eNews, No. 315, Week of July 1, 2019

“I am in it for the long haul. If God called me to care for these people, I was going to be faithful,” says Eric Durso, who is now the lead pastor of Grace Rancho, a Charis Fellowship congregation in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., as he reflects on God’s faithfulness to the revitalized church over the last year.

The congregation of Grace Rancho (formally known as Grace Fellowship of Alta Loma) is a product of what churches within the Charis Fellowship are known for: caring for one another, training leaders, and mobilizing existing churches to plant new fellowships.

Grace Rancho

Three years ago, Grace Fellowship of Alta Loma had become a struggling congregation. Simultaneously, the pastors of Grace Church of Simi Valley, a Charis Fellowship congregation in Simi Valley, Calif. (Jordan Bakker, senior pastor) began praying about expanding their ministry with the possibility of either planting a new church or rejuvenating an existing one.

In early October of 2017, Simi Valley was invited to attend a meeting of the Southern California-Arizona district ministerium (now operating under Grace Churches Network) to discuss the plans of Alta Loma after Roy Halberg’s (the lead pastor at the time) retirement. At the meeting, Roy expressed that the church needed to be revitalized. Upon hearing this statement, the pastors of Simi Valley felt as though God had answered their prayer to rejuvenate an existing church.

Pastor Eric Durso

It was shortly after the conversation with Alta Loma that Eric Durso was commissioned to take on the task of restoring the church back to health. Eric began praying every day about the mission that was laid out before him and some members of Simi Valley became interested in joining Eric in the process.

Don Hocking With The Lord

On Christmas Eve, Don Hocking longtime leader and missionary and founder of Grace Bible Mission in Cameroon came face-to-face with His Savior. We received the following info from his son, Pastor Tom Hocking (Bellflower Brethren):

“My Dad slipped into Jesus’ presence at 10:45 PM last night, shortly after I visited him and Mom after our Christmas Eve service. I’m not sure if he was aware that I was there but I prayed with him and encouraged him to stop struggling and rest in Christ. I returned to their room after he passed until his body was removed by Forest Lawn personnel around 2 AM. I went to Forest Lawn and made the following arrangements for his services:

Visitation: Room A/B @ Forest Lawn Long Beach [1500 E. San Antonio Drive, LB, 90807] from 2-5 PM on Sunday, January 6.

Graveside: Forest Lawn Long Beach [1500 E. San Antonio Drive, LB, 90807] at 9:30 AM on Monday, January 7.

Memorial: Worship Center @ Bellflower Brethren Church [9405 E. Flower St., Bellflower, 90706] at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 7.

Lunch Reception: Fellowship Hall @ Bellflower Brethren Church [9405 E. Flower St., Bellflower, 90706] at noon on Monday, January 7.

A day of GLADNESS

A day of GLADness with our Network on April 10, 2018. Thanks to 40+ leaders from 13 of our regional Grace Churches for the time and the encouragement!

We worshiped, prayed, talked, listened, watched videos, gave away books & coffee and ate steak together with glad and sincere hearts! It was awesome to hear about what God is doing in His Church and through His people all over our region!

The following churches were present and shared a celebration & prayer update:

Beaumont (Cherry Valley), CA – Grace Fellowship Church

Bellflower, CA – Bellflower Brethren Church

Lakewood, CA – Iglesia Christiana de La Communidad

Lancaster, CA – Ministerio Amor y Restauracion

Long Beach, CA – Community Grace Brethren Church

Long Beach, CA – Long Beach Grace Brethren Church

Long Beach, CA – Los Altos Grace Brethren Church

Norwalk, CA – Grace Brethren Church

Orange, CA – Grace Church of Orange

Orange, CA – Daily Bread Church Plant

Seal Beach, CA – Grace Community Church

South Pasadena, CA – Grace Brethren Church

Whittier, CA – Community Grace Brethren Church

The following verse was the theme for our day:

“The humble will see their God at work and be glad.
Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged.”

Psalm 69:32 NLT

Our network certainly “saw our God at work” through our churches and truly had a day of “being glad!”

Here was a video greeting for our day from Dave Guiles regarding the Charis Alliance and Encompass World Partners:
