New Church Profile for Iglesia Cristiana Anclados a Cristo
After several years of conducting activities and building relationships with the residents of a nearby Hispanic neighborhood known as El Modena, in January of 2016, the leaders of Grace Church of Orange decided it was time to initiate a Spanish-speaking Bible study. In search of leadership for this new effort, discussions were had with Pastor Manuel Espinosa of the Lakewood Hispanic church. Manuel’s associate, Jose Antonio Sanchez, recommended contacting Carlos Bautista, a childhood friend from Mexico.
Carlos and his family live within a half-mile of the Grace Church campus. The Bautista family has been instrumental in starting several Hispanic churches in Orange County over the past 30 years. They have served in church leadership roles and been the music worship team for many of these churches. They began meeting many of the Grace Church contacts in El Modena and calling believers they knew who might be interested in helping start a new church. The first gathering took place on the Grace Church campus on June 26, 2016. Expecting a dozen people, 30 showed up for the first meeting. Within five months this Spanish-speaking group numbered 70.
In August, the group welcomed Rev. Sandro Copernico Hernandez and his wife, Antoinette, into their fellowship. Sandro and his family were known by many of the group. A short time later, they invited Sandro to be their pastor. Pastor Hernandez, ordained by the Southern Baptist, served as Chaplain in the Mexican Navy for 12 years, achieving the rank of Captain. He is now seeking ordination with the Grace Brethren/Charis Fellowship.
On August 5, 2017 the church celebrated its 1st anniversary with ceremonies at Grace Orange. They currently have a weekly worship service on Sunday afternoons, and a prayer and Bible study on Friday evenings. They have a leadership team made up of the church leaders of ministries – children, youth, men’s, women’s, evangelism, worship music, and finance – and Pastor Sandro.
CHURCH STRUCTURE AND STATEMENTS
The Anclados Constitution and Bylaws are patterned after the documents of Grace Church of Orange. They are seeking to establish Biblically qualified elder leadership with deacon ministry leaders. Until such time as they have identified their elders, the present leadership team will be their decision making body.
Their doctrinal statement is consistent with the Statement of Faith of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches/ Charis Fellowship and the new Charis documents. Anclados a Cristo fully embraces the Charis Commitment to Common Identity and Common Mission.
The following statements were approved in the summer of 2017 by the members of Anclados a Cristo:
To reach the generations of the community that are separated from the Eternal Father, to show the (amazing, incredible, intense, excellent, masterful) love of God through the Gospel of salvation. To be a place where people will find understanding, love, hope, and faith in Jesus Christ, the son of God. To restore families and blessing the coming generations through the sharing of the Good News of the Gospel.
To bring every soul to repentance and growth in a full understanding of the Sacred Scriptures; and to develop their gifts and involve them serving the Body of Christ (the local church). In the church Anchored to Christ we do not make Christians, we make disciples. “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
Our values as leaders of Anclados a Cristo are LOVE, FAITH, SERVICE, GENEROSITY, WORSHIP, and EXCELLENCE. ”But without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6) “Three things remain forever; faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of the three is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)
In their application to the Grace Churches Network, they wrote, “We want to join the Grace Churches Network because we share a common Biblical doctrine and admire the vision of the Network. We want to be a part of this fellowship and connect with churches that can help mentor us and grow in a healthy way. We look forward to participating in the Network events and contributing to the Network vision of preaching the Gospel in more communities.”
